Gauge is the spec buyers most often skip, and it is the one that decides whether a pillow survives the trip or shows up flat. Too thin and it blows out under a heavy product or a rough handoff. Too thick and you pay for strength you do not need on every parcel. Getting gauge right is the quiet difference between a low damage rate and a stack of returns.

Microns and gauge, defined
Film thickness is quoted two ways. Microns are the metric measure, where a higher number means thicker film. Gauge is an older imperial unit still common in North America. The two describe the same thing, so a spec sheet may list either. What matters is direction: more microns or more gauge equals a stronger, more puncture-resistant film that holds air under more load.
When to go heavier
Heavier film earns its cost in three situations: heavy products that press hard on the pillows, items with corners or edges that can puncture thin film, and shipping lanes with rough handling or long dwell times where a slow leak would flatten a lighter pillow. If your parcels stack under weight in a trailer, the bottom layers need film that will not creep and deflate.
Blowout and seal strength
A blowout is a sudden rupture, usually at a weak seal or a thin spot, that collapses the pillow and leaves the product loose. Two things prevent it: adequate film gauge for the load, and strong seals between pillows so pressure in one does not tear the next. Heavier gauge helps both, but seal quality matters just as much, which is why film and inflator should be matched rather than mixed blindly.
Matching gauge to product weight
The practical rule is to step up gauge as product weight and edge risk rise. Light apparel and soft goods run fine on standard film. Boxed electronics, bottles, and mid-weight goods want a heavier grade. Dense, sharp, or heavy items call for the thickest film and often a cushioned or quilted construction on top of raw gauge.

Don’t over-spec everything
It is tempting to run the heaviest film across the board for peace of mind, but that raises material cost on every parcel, including the light ones that never needed it. If your product mix varies, it can pay to run two gauges: a standard grade for the bulk of light orders and a heavier grade for the minority of heavy or fragile ones.
Gauge measures film thickness in microns or gauge units, and it should rise with product weight and puncture risk. Match gauge to your heaviest common load to prevent blowouts, but avoid over-speccing light parcels, and remember seal strength matters as much as raw thickness.
